In ancient Rome, the Acta Diurna populi Romani (briefly referred to as Acta Diurna) was an authorized and official account of notable events that occurred in Rome. Its contents were partly official (judicial news, imperial decrees, those of the Roman Senate and magistrates) and partly private (announcements of births, marriages, and deaths).
Acta diurna is an expression that has inspired the titles of periodical publications or journalistic columns. In the 1930s, for example, Acta diurna was a famous column in the Osservatore Romano written by Guido Gonella, assigned to the Veronese journalist by Monsignor Montini, who would later become Pope Paul VI.
