Numbers are a fundamental element for quantifying space, time, and speed when it comes to traveling and speed competitions; they are certain and reassuring data that help make sense of the races. However, one cannot overlook the human component that takes part in competitions, the lives of the people who have contributed (and continue to contribute) to making those events so extraordinary and memorable.

Gioele Dix, actor, author, and passionate driver, offers a reflection on the competition that, more than any other, places the human element at the center even before the machines: the 1000 Miglia, conceived in the 1920s by four friends from Brescia in response to the failure to assign the Grand Prix of Italy to their hometown.
