From 2 to 30 August, on the occasion of the celebrations for the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, Tosca is back on stage at the Arena Opera Festival for four unmissable performances, with an exceptional cast.
The protagonist for the first three evenings will be played for the first time in the Arena by Anna Netrebko, alongside her life partner and on stage the tenor Yusif Eyvazov and the baritone Luca Salsi. On August 30 the soprano Elena Stikhina in the role of Tosca and baritone Ludovic Tézier in the role of Baron Scarpia will make their debut, alongside Jonas Kaufmann on stage, who will play the role of Mario Cavaradossi.
A sumptuous staging in the Arenian style created by director, set designer and costume designer Hugo De Ana, which combines powerful symbols, rich traditional costumes, rapid changes of scenery and astonishing effects. A fascinating and musically revolutionary work, set in Rome in the 1800s and embellished by immortal novels such as «Vissi d’arte» and «E lucevan le stelle».
The story tells of the seductive singer Floria Tosca, lover of the liberal painter Mario Cavaradossi, but also courted by the papal police minister Scarpia. He imprisoned the painter and blackmailed Tosca: if the woman did not give herself to him, her beloved would be shot. Tosca gets the promise of his salvation, and then kills him. The painter, according to the agreements with Scarpia, is passed by arms on the stands of Castel Sant'Angelo and Tosca then desperate throws herself from the castle.
Performances: 2, 9, 16, 30 august at 9.00 p.m.
