The conference cycle opens on April 8 with Dr. Angela Ruta, former official of the Archaeological Superintendency of Veneto and director of the National Atestino Museum, author of numerous studies on the ancient Venetians. Dr. Ruta, based on her latest book, will focus her talk on the role of women in pre-Roman Veneto: wives, mothers, but also priestesses and entrepreneurs.
On April 16, Prof. Alfredo Buonopane, former professor at the University of Verona, epigrapher and historian, will talk to us about how Veneto gradually came under the influence of Rome from an economic, cultural, and political standpoint.
The conferences dedicated to the Celts will be given by Dr. Fabio Saccoccio, a researcher in protohistory at the University of Nottingham, and Dr. Giampaolo Rizzetto, a scholar of prehistory and protohistory.
Dr. Saccoccio's talk on April 23 will focus on the Cenomani, the Celtic tribe that, according to Livy's account, occupied the territories of Brescia and Verona.
The talk by Dr. Rizzetto, scheduled for April 30, will specifically discuss the rich Celtic necropolises discovered in the Veronese plain, where signs of ethnic belonging, such as weapons (shields, helmets, and swords), gradually give way to grave goods that highlight the progressive integration into the Roman world.
The meetings will take place at 9:00 PM at the Auditorium of Santa Maria Maddalena (Isola della Scala, via Roma 35)
Before or after these meetings, it will be possible to visit the adjacent archaeological museum.
