The Veronese Theatre Summer opens up to the international dimension, with a focus on the new generations of actors and their way of relating to the Shakespearean universe.
The new project, created in collaboration with the Teatro Stabile del Veneto – National Theatre, focuses on young people, asking them firsthand about how they live and perceive Shakespeare and his texts, in the most traditional forms as well as through rewritings, adaptations, and reinterpretations.
Works from 4 European Theatre Academies will be hosted, coming from France, the United Kingdom, India, and Macedonia, comparing visions and theatrical practices. They will also feature recent graduates from the Carlo Goldoni Theatre Academy and the very young participants of the Spazio Teatro Giovani project.
It all starts in Italy on September 10 with the students of Spazio Teatro Giovani, who present “BETWEEN TWO WORLDS. Another Romeo Another Juliet”. The story of an impossible love is proposed in a contemporary key, with a writing set in New York in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. On September 13, “D (AS DESDEMONA)” features the Skopje Dance Academy. Choreographer Risima Risimkin brings to the stage the figure of Desdemona, exploring her emotional charge in the context of epic themes of love, envy, jealousy, and murder.
The Carlo Goldoni Theatre Academy of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto – National Theatre will perform on September 16 with “JUST A DREAM”: a rewriting of Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream” that attempts to investigate the theme of power. On September 18, Theatre House, an artistic and theatrical research center based in West Bengal, brings Hamlet to the stage. Director Alessandro Anil presents a Hamlet relocated to its own time and place, giving space to sacred elements like earth and water. A representation emerges between dream and reality, capable of evoking something that Hamlet himself struggles to fully comprehend.
The East 15 Acting School from the United Kingdom presents “ROMEO & JULIET, POST SCRIPTUM” on September 19. Another rewriting of “Romeo and Juliet” where in the Underworld, far from each other and unable to speak, they traverse the afterlife hoping to embrace again, encountering other Shakespearean characters with similar tragic fates, who have found their own ways to communicate in this wordless world, drawing from various theatrical codes. The final performance of this series will be “LODGES” proposed on September 20 by La Serre Company (France), a company of former students from the Théâtre National de Bretagne.
