A Shakespearean masterpiece that confronts the audience with a recurring theme: violence against women.
On the stage of the Roman Theatre on July 10 and 11, Othello will be performed, rewritten by Dacia Maraini, revisiting dramatically relevant themes: the illusion of possession, crime, and suicide out of folly.
Desdemona loves Othello. She marries him against the conventions of the time, defying her father, choosing freely. She is a woman who believes in love. Othello is a loyal and brave captain but unable to manage his own emotions and overwhelmed by suspicion, succumbs to violence and kills Desdemona. Then he takes his own life, out of jealousy, possession, and insecurity. And here lies the urgency of the performance, to speak to young consciences, to teach through morality, and to demonstrate without technological mediations the pain and shock for lives that are not respected.
But what happens when love turns into control? When the desire for freedom is stifled by the need for possession? And above all: can we still learn something from Othello?
