The Palio del drappo verde, also known as the Palio di Verona, was established more than 800 years ago and represents the oldest organized race in the world.
The goal of the Verona race has always been foot racing, and for this reason, it stands out from other Palii, which are usually dominated by horse races.
A green palio (the "green cloth") was the prize for the winner of the foot race, and a rooster was the prize for the last runner.
The Palio del Drappo Verde is remarkable because no other foot race has been organized for so many centuries; the reason for this is almost certainly due to the fact that the requirement to maintain the race has been incorporated into the law of Verona.
The historic foot race returns this year for its 607th edition.
On Sunday, March 15 at 8:30 AM, the delivery of race numbers to the athletes is scheduled at the Park of Villa Vendri in Santa Maria in Stelle, while the start is set for 10:00 AM.
The arrival, refreshment, delivery of race packs, and award ceremonies are also expected to be held at the Villa Park, with entrance from via Pantheon.
