The Canoso family has always believed in the quality of wine produced on the hills of Monteforte d’Alpone, cultivating their vineyards here and selling bulk wine in the markets of northern Italy. From a very young age, Giuseppe Meneghello Canoso began working as a cellar worker and wine merchant and, in the early 1970s, he purchased the Cà del Vento estate, laying the foundation for the construction of the new winery. With the arrival of his sons Primo and Massimo, an agronomist and a wine technician, an eco-sustainable approach was adopted, reducing production and increasing quality, leading to the first bottling in 1990. In 2016, Canoso met Giovanni, an entrepreneur with wine in his DNA, and together they decided to relaunch the brand. Thus, looking to the future, over the years the company has aimed to focus on a team of young professionals with international experiences and a strong sense of belonging, who take care of this small and precious reality, enhancing the fruits of this land.
In the southeastern part of Soave Classico lies the Canoso winery, within the crù Cà del Vento, the smallest unit in the area and exclusively owned by the company. With a production of about 70,000 bottles per year, we approach winemaking in a minimalist way, combining the value of tradition with the guarantee of state-of-the-art tools, paying great attention to every single phase without using any animal-derived products. Most of the work is done in the vineyard, preserving all the characteristics of the grapes, and for fermentation, selected yeasts are used at low temperatures. The white wines mature on the yeasts for a minimum of six months in steel tanks, while the maturation of the red wines includes transfers to French barriques and tonneaux. By using tanks ranging from 5 hectoliters to a maximum of 200 hectoliters, we can give individuality to our wines, vinifying and working small batches from the different plots.
To date, the company manages 12 hectares of hillside property (between 90m and 290m) across different plots, mostly facing southeast. We focus on Garganega, Trebbiano Veronese and Manzoni Bianco, sourced from fantastic coastal sites within the Classica area of Soave, as well as a selection of red grape varieties for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Valpolicella, and Amarone. The vineyards are between 20 and 45 years old and, benefiting from excellent sun exposure and constant ventilation, allow for the production of healthy grapes and wines with an elegant structure. The soils, of volcanic origin, enriched with fossils, clay, rocky structures, and tuff, are very fertile and low in acid, imparting a distinctive minerality that complements the fruity and floral aromas, gifting us with a full taste in every sip. We have a low-impact approach to vineyard management with the aim of producing quality wines for the years to come, but not at the expense of the environment.
