Davide Enia tells his Palermo, exploring the neurotic relationship with Cosa Nostra and its devastating impact on everyone’s lives.
Enia wants to try to understand the "mafia in me," that invisible part that hides in the habits, silences, and daily gestures of those who grew up in a land marked by power and fear. He recalls dramatic events that have marked Palermo's history, such as the assassination attempt on Giovanni Falcone, or the case of Giuseppe Di Matteo, the child son of a state witness, kidnapped and killed by the mafia after 778 days of captivity. He describes his personal experience: the first murder he saw was at 8 years old while returning home from school; he knew Judge Borsellino and the priest killed by the mafia, Father Pino Puglisi, who was one of his teachers in high school.
Enia reveals the fear of Palermitans, that constant sensation of being in danger that they cannot shake off. He uses the tools of Sicilian civil theater: he combines body, singing, acting, dialect, and cunto, giving the audience a language born from pain but still seeking the light.
Self-Portrait is a tragedy, a civil oration, a memorial, an intimate and collective self-portrait, a confrontation with the State, a series of unanswered questions addressed to God.
