Open doors to present artists and new ideas through exhibitions, workshops, events and conferences.
A multifaceted program that will give the general public an opportunity to experience the complex and lively world of contemporary art up close
Now in its 20th edition, the Contemporary Day will have as its guiding image the work Woman in a Cage (1975/2024) by Tommaso Binga.
The proposed image is taken from a 1974 performance in which the artist, feminist and activist for women's rights, presented himself with his head encased in a cage for canaries, having his mouth shut by male hands: a reflection on the condition of coercive subalternity of women, but, more generally, on the inequalities that are based on privilege and forms of control, often presented as care and protection. The cage for canaries thus becomes a barrier not only physical but also metaphorical, on the inaccessibility to freedom as an inalienable right and to all the tools and possibilities that can lead each of us to a condition of greater awareness and emancipation.
The leitmotif of the Contemporary Day will be the theme of accessibility, in line with ICOM's new definition of museum (Prague, 24 August 2022) which reads: "The museum is a permanent, non-profit institution that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits cultural, material and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums promote diversity and sustainability, operate and communicate in an ethical and professional manner and with community participation, offering diverse experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing."
Throughout the day there is free admission to the Gallery, which will host a full program of activities.
