Admire and discover the city of Verona through its forts, places of passage and defense of the city.
Thanks to interventions aimed at its use, such as the highlighting of the exit door, it is possible to visit the interior spaces of the bastion free of charge every second Sunday of the month.
The bastion of St. George, one of the most complex and imposing works designed by the Habsburg officer Franz von Scholl, was conceived for the control and defence of Porta Trento and the postal route to Tyrol.
From the basement there is access, through a series of rooms, to the poterna which leads, through the moat, to the long counter-carpa tunnel designed for the defence, by means of rifles, of the area of the embankment and the fortifications. The tunnel was built of Eocene fossil marl limestone, coming from the hills of Quinzano, and has terracotta vaults, slots for riflemen and wolf’s mouths for ventilation.
The first section of the tunnel extends from the bank of the river to Porta Trento, and develops along the curve of the embankment for about 200 metres. Near the door, the tunnel is divided into rooms and a small exit to the moat (now visible only from the inside) to allow the sudden exit of the soldiers in the fence and outside the door itself. The tunnel then continues parallel to the moat in front of Port Trento and then surrounds the Venetian roundabout. At the end, a completely underground house (blockhaus), under the initial stretch of via Ippolito Nievo. This last structure, in a good state of preservation, was equipped, in addition to rifles, with a gunnery station to control the road to Valdonega.
Its management is entrusted to Gruppo Scout Agesci Verona 10.
