Written by David Mamet in 2007, right during the Great Recession, November is a two-act play characterized by a cynical and sharp humor typical of his dramatic style.
The protagonist is outgoing president Charles Smith, whose re-election seems unlikely due to a drop in popularity, increasingly scarce funds, and the threat of an imminent nuclear war. However, the man does not give up and makes a series of risky decisions to try to regain the public's trust and change the fortunes of his campaign, such as sparing the lives of two turkeys just before Thanksgiving.
The play is set in a country in crisis, where the American dream becomes the justification for any means, even the most questionable. Mamet therefore highlights themes related to corruption, manipulation, and the fragility of a system willing to sacrifice every moral principle to maintain power. His aim is not only to entertain the audience but also to provide food for thought about the world we live in.
