The Puccini lyrical drama returns in three acts characterized by the rich production of the Arena Foundation of Verona in a magical setting, with the enchanting scenery conceived by the late Franco Zeffirelli and costumes designed by Academy Award winner Emi Wada.
The opera is set in China, in Beijing, in a mythical "fairy tale time." The protagonist of the drama is the beautiful princess Turandot, a solitary soul burdened by the weight she must bear: within her resides the spirit of an ancestor who was raped and killed. This is the reason that ignites discomfort and horror in Turandot towards men. But fate will manage to touch Turandot's heart, and a passionate kiss will crown the love between the beautiful princess and Calaf, a deposed Tartar prince, a daring champion of Cupid.
Painful and passionate, Giacomo Puccini's last opera is surely one of the most beautiful love stories of all time, between love and hope.
One of the most famous arias of the opera is "Nessun dorma,” a romance sung by the character of Calaf at the beginning of Act III, when he finally has the chance to win the love of Turandot, the ice princess.
Performances: August 7, 14, 21, 27 at 9:00 p.m. - September 3, 11 at 9:00 p.m.
