Winter Games! Winter sports. Photographs from the LIFE archives (1936-1972)

The spaces of the International Center of Photography Scaligeri Excavations in Verona host a large exhibition dedicated to the documentary photographer Dorothea Lange.

The exhibition, curated by Walter Guadagnini and Monica Poggi, retraces the years from the Great Depression to the internment of Japanese American citizens during World War II.

The great changes in history are captured through the lens of the American artist who narrates this historical period starting from the lives of individuals: migrations, social inequalities, discriminations, and environmental crises become the protagonists of the exhibition path that guides the visitor through the United States of the 1930s and 1940s.

The first images observe the effects of the Great Depression in the cities, among employment offices, strikes, and demonstrations, before moving along the roads traveled by thousands of families forced to abandon their lands due to drought, dust storms, and the agricultural crisis.

Through approximately 200 photographs from the collections of the Library of Congress in Washington and the New York Public Library, Dorothea Lange's gaze continues to question the present, reminding us that behind great crises, economic transformations, and political decisions there are always the lives, faces, and dignity of the people who experience them.
