The Flavours of Lessinia, a Treat for the Tastebuds
- REDAZIONALE
Lessinia rewards all the senses and any day out here must include a stop for refreshments in one of the delightful Alpine dairies that are scattered across these mountains.
In praise of the dairy: from Monte Veronese cheese, to ricotta and yoghurt
In these verdant, grassy pastures and valleys, dairy products take centre stage. Every dairy in Lessinia has its own delicacies to delight your taste buds, from Monte Veronese cheese to ricotta and fresh yoghurt. Or just a good glass of milk, where you can taste the countryside and tradition. Maybe it’s just the fresh mountain air but when I visit Lessinia,
I feel like the food has more flavour, the meat is better, the cheese is tastier. Of course, after a long walk in the countryside you work up an appetite, but I believe that at higher altitude, in these timeless places, the simple act of eating becomes a real joy.
Gnocchi Sbatùi, part of the local heritage
Even though the majority of local produce is dairy, there is no lack of cured meats. After a lovely walk in the countryside, there is nothing better than stopping off at a dairy, sitting outside in the sunshine staring at the incredible views, and ordering a platter of cold meats and cheese produced on the premises, all washed down with a nice glass of wine. And not forgetting honey, forest fruits, chestnuts, potatoes and walnut bread.
Yes, I am something of a foodie! As someone who enjoys food, I have to recommend the trademark dish of this region, packed with flavour: Gnocchi Sbatùi. These tasty gnocchi, a local speciality, are made using flour, water, salt, melted butter (ideally fresh from a local dairy!), Monte Veronese cheese and ricotta. You have to try it!
This simple, traditional dish is big on flavour. Then come the local desserts, such as shortcrust tarts, home-made jams and traditional cakes including Torta Cimbra Ripiena, which is linked to an ancient story about three girls who worked in the fields of Lessinia cutting the hay.
According to the legend, towards the end of summer the young girls wanted to celebrate their friendship with a cake using the ingredients they had available: home-made apricot jam, grapes and pears. And so one of Lessinia’s traditional desserts was born! Good food is a priority across the whole province, I am sure that our cuisine and local produce will be some of your favourite things about a visit to Verona.
