The State Archive of Verona is the place where the documents and testimonies of the city's history are kept and promotes knowledge of the territory.

At the time of its opening on May 1, 1941, the Section of the State Archive of Verona was established in the rooms located on the second floor of the former Jesuit convent of San Sebastiano.

During the wartime events, the heritage was largely evacuated several times to various locations in the countryside and, at the end of the conflict, it was distributed in three temporary deposits (ground floor of the headquarters building; an arch in the Arena; the Civic Museum at Palazzo Pompei), only to be finally relocated to the headquarters premises.

However, since the time of the establishment of the Section, the inadequacy of the headquarters' premises became evident and, in the aftermath of the end of the World War, a troubled evaluation process began, leading the Province of Verona to initiate in 1957 the executive phase for the construction on a lot granted in exchange by the Municipality of Verona in Via delle Franceschine.

Inaugurated in 1961, this headquarters served the Institute until the move on March 30, 2015, to the current new headquarters, owned by the Cariverona Foundation, located within the area of the former General Warehouses of Verona, which is subject to an ongoing urban redevelopment program. The building is under constraints issued by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities, and Tourism, and has undergone a conservative restoration intervention functional to the placement of the Archive. The main building, which rises on 2 levels, ground floor and first floor, in addition to those on the mezzanine and underground levels north and south, consists of a complex of state-of-the-art archival deposits. There are areas dedicated to offices and a consultation room, as well as spaces designated for technical functions, all served by technologically advanced air treatment units (UTA). Each deposit is compartmentalized REI, and is equipped with safety fire doors. Access for external users is limited to the visitor area, without the possibility of cohabitation with the archives and the "sensitive" areas.
