The church of SS. Fermo and Rustico began as a chapel of the Parish of S. Maria in Colognola, mentioned by Pope Eugene III in the Bull he issued in 1145. Elevated to parish status before 1456, it was expanded in the second half of the 15th century.
The current building was constructed on the ruins of the previous one between 1612 and 1629. The façade was then renovated in 1746.
Externally, the building presents a gabled neoclassical façade. In the center, framed by two pairs of tuscan-style pilasters, the rectangular entrance portal opens, made of soft stone, surmounted by a broken tympanum supported by molded corbels. Just beyond the portal, a polygonal window illuminates the interior of the building. On its sides, within two niches, the statues of the patron saints are placed. The façade concludes with a tympanum with a slightly protruding cornice.
The bell tower is attached to the northern side of the presbytery, at the height of the apse.
The church has a rectangular single-nave plan with four lateral semi-chapels featuring altars and a quadrangular presbytery raised by three steps, ending with a semicircular apse.
The internal façades of the nave, covered by a flat ceiling with a coffered decoration and central painting, are rhythmically adorned by slender pilasters and crowned by a high molded entablature; the walls are decorated with wall paintings depicting scenes from the lives of the patron saints.
The presbytery, introduced by an elegant serliana structure, is topped by a dome with coffered decoration and a lantern on top.
The flooring of the nave is made of tiles of white marble and red Verona marble; a geometric design in polychrome marble characterizes the floor of the presbytery. The roof has two slopes covered with tile and the supporting structure consists of wooden trusses.
Along the sides of the hall open four emerging lateral chapels, two on each side facing each other, which house the altar of St. Biagio and the altar of the Rosary on the northern side, and the altars of the Crucifix and the Sacred Heart (formerly the altar of the Immaculate Conception) on the opposite side; on the southern side of the nave, near the entrance, is the small baptistery chapel. The main entrance, with an internal wooden vestibule, opens at the center of the façade wall, facing the modest forecourt in front, preceded by an external staircase.
