Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it had more modest dimensions than those of today. It underwent radical restoration in the 17th century and again in the 18th century, but suffered severe damage in the 1891 earthquake; it was repaired but in 1940 further expansion work was necessary, giving the structure its current Latin cross characteristics.
The existing frescoes in the old part of the ceiling are attributed to the school of Signorini, while those in the dome and the baptistery were executed by Carlo Donati in 1940. The company of Berto da Cogolo created the gates, the small doors of the tabernacles, and the chandeliers.
