As early as the end of the 12th century, behind the church of San Martino (or della Disciplina), there was a trapezoidal canonical house, intended as the residence for the officiating clergy and also partly used as a goods storage.
The building originally consisted of two distinctly separate parts: the northern part was designated as the residence of the chaplain, while the southern part, derived from an ancient fortification, was partly used by the abbot and the clergy officiating in Calavena and partly to meet the abbey's needs.
This second complex has had various functions: a warehouse for the collection and preservation of tithes and rents collected, but also the residence of the abbot; a school where the clergy were trained; a court of first instance; a representation hall and a center of power.
Various fragments of frescoes remain from the long stays of the abbot, revealed during the latest works carried out. The frescoes are located at the entrance of the primitive canonical house, on the first floor, and in the chapel.
