La Pesciara di Bolca

Fossil deposit known for over 500 years and renowned worldwide for the quantity of Tertiary era fossils found and for the perfect preservation of the animal and plant species discovered here.

The gallery was excavated after removing the first fossil layer that was on the surface.

The fossils, primarily represented by fish and plants, are found within five overlapping layers, made up of finely grained limestone that is densely stratified, interspersed with limestone layers containing remains of invertebrates and shells.
