After the conclusion of the First World War (November 4th, 1918), which cost the warring states millions of lives, Montecchia also wanted to erect a monument to the fallen, as a lasting memory of its sons who died in battle or as a result of their injuries. The stone structure was built in Piazza Frutti and the official inauguration took place on September 24, 1922.
The monument consists of a large square base, elevated above the parking lot and protected by eight cannon shells connected by a sturdy chain. In the center of the area stands a small obelisk resting on a square base, on the north side of which some recently added red Verona marble slabs bearing the names of the fallen from the Second World War have been attached. The main body of the obelisk, on the other hand, houses the engravings of the names of the fallen from the Great War. Always on the north side, in a volumetric concave movement decorated like a rocky wall, there is the bronze figure of a soldier pointing his rifle downwards, topped by a star. Completing the ensemble is a bronze eagle placed at the top.
This is a true work of art created by the local artist Egidio Casarotti, whose name has spread to other areas of Italy and even abroad, where exhibitions of his works are still organized today.
