The Fossil Museum of Roncà is a must-see for anyone visiting the Eastern Verona area.
Founded in 1973 by the Val d'Alpone Paleontological Association Val Nera Group, it now houses a rich collection of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils, as well as minerals from the Roncà area.
Upon entering the museum, you can take a leap back in time to see life 40 million years ago, when Roncà was still under a tropical sea. Thanks to the continuous eruptions of the volcanic complex of Monte Calvarina, the fauna and flora that existed at that time have managed to arrive to us fossilized.
The museum path winds through three rooms: the ground floor is dedicated to the current environments and biodiversity of the Roncà area, while the other two, located on the first floor, describe the environment 40 million years ago and showcase the most characteristic fossils of the era. Inside the museum's rooms, you can admire minerals, shells, oysters, corals, as well as the head of a crocodile and the majestic Prototherium, an ancient relative of the dugongs that still inhabit tropical seas today.
The museum is thus a meeting point for experts, the curious, enthusiasts, and also a valuable study resource for students and more.
In agreement with the Val Nera association, it is possible to take a hike along the nature trail and visit the fossil cells that have enriched the museum, accompanied through a fascinating environment of forests and waterfalls.
