Built in the 14th century by the will of Cansignorio della Scala near Porta Aquila, it was the ancient residence of the Praetors and Governors of Soave. During the Venetian domination, it became the residence of the Captains who represented the highest authority; for this reason, the building is also called the Captain's Palace.
Once, it included 24 rooms on the upper floor, while the ground floor housed stables for horses.
The palace and the attached Italian garden "Parco Zanella" were donated to the municipality of Soave by the Zanella family.
The entire complex, now the seat of the Municipality of Soave, underwent a radical restoration between 1982 and 1985. The space in front of the loggia is now used for events and cultural manifestations, and often hosts large impactful art installations.
