Located near the center, the public scale represented an essential infrastructure for the local rural economy, closely linked to wine production.
The structure consisted of a large iron platform mounted on a tilting system capable of weighing even agricultural carts and heavy vehicles.
During the grape harvest, farmers and laborers arrived with freshly picked grapes to determine their weight.
Behind the scale was a small technical room: from a little window, the operator monitored the scale and recorded the data, then handing over the receipt.
A curious detail: the slight movement of the platform became a game for children, who enjoyed making it sway while the adults worked.
In addition to its technical function, the scale was also a gathering place. During the grape harvest, it transformed into a kind of "agricultural square," made up of waits, exchanges, stories, and relationships.
As time went by and modern systems were introduced, the scale lost its original use, but it remained an identity symbol for the community.
In 2025, the Municipality of Illasi promoted a restoration and enhancement project, aiming to preserve and transmit the historical memory of the place.
Today, the scale no longer fulfills its original function, but it remains a point of cultural interest that tells the story of the connection between territory, agricultural work, and wine tradition.
