In July, Puccini's masterpiece La Bohéme will be staged for four exceptional evenings, directed by Alfonso Signorini with sets by Juan Guillermo Nova, based on the production admired for the first time in 2024.
Complicity, fun, budding romances, lasting friendships: all of this is present in Bohème, an eternally youthful opera, thanks to Puccini's most inspired and touching music. A 'perfect' work where sentiment, humor, and energy coexist, featuring some of the most beautiful melodies and the most famous and beloved arias of all time.
Puccini's opera saw the light in 1896, after three years of work marked by a dispute with Leoncavallo, the author of the famous Pagliacci, who was putting the same subject to music. A genuine interest, as it was also autobiographical: Puccini condensed the best of his melodic vein, his orchestration skill, and his infallible sense of theater, inspired by memories of the tough years of study in Milan, when he shared dreams and hopes but also disappointments and hardships with his roommate Mascagni, another future successful composer. The success of Puccini's opera overshadowed that of his colleague, and since its Turin premiere, La Bohème has continued its journey on stages around the world, even conquering cinema. In the Arena, it is the eleventh most performed title of all time, staged 80 times since 1938 with interpreters such as Di Stefano, Tebaldi, Lugo, Scotto, Bastianini, Stella, Aragall, Pavarotti, Gasdia, Vinco, La Scola, Cedolins, Alvarez, Grigolo, and many others.
In Paris, four young men of great hopes and very limited means share a strong friendship and a small attic: Rodolfo writes to make a living, Marcello paints, Schaunard teaches music, Colline is a philosopher. On Christmas Eve, they manage to fool their landlord, avoiding paying rent, and go out to have fun in the Latin Quarter. Rodolfo lingers and receives a visit from Mimì, a poor and beautiful young tenant, seeking help to reignite her light: love strikes immediately. In the square, the friends toast: Mimì has joined them, and Musetta, Marcello’s ex, will also join, not without first making him publicly jealous once again, as the festive military parade passes by. A few months later, the first crises arise: Rodolfo, who has run away from home, confides in Marcello that he wants to leave Mimì just to secure her a better future; the girl is indeed suffering from tuberculosis, and their dire living conditions worsen her condition. However, Mimì has followed him and overheard everything: still in love, the two postpone the moment of goodbye. Some time later, both couples will break up, but the fates of the four friends, Musetta, and Mimì will intertwine once again.
