The ancient church of the village is mentioned as a parish by Pope Eugene III in 1145 when he speaks of pleben de mezano cum cappelis ed decimis et castello et familis; later, the church became a parish with a parish priest in 1460 and was dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
Of this building, abandoned in the late 19th century following the construction of the new parish church, only the Romanesque sandstone bell tower remains today. Built within the parish before 1460, it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic styles according to a project by architect Don Angelo Gottardi between 1871 and 1889. The consecration dates back to 1936.
The building features a gabled facade in neo-Romanesque style. It faces south. The bell tower is located on the side of the eastern flank of the church. The floor plan consists of a single rectangular nave with four semi-side chapels each with an altar, a quadrangular raised presbytery with five steps, concluding with a polygonal apse with five sides.
In the side chapels, there are the altar of the Madonna with Child and the altar of the Assumption on the left side, and the altars of the Crucifix and the altar of the Sacred Heart on the opposite side. The interior façades, rhythmically adorned with molded pilasters, are framed by cornices and decorated with tempera ornamental motifs; the surrounding walls of the presbytery open in the upper register with a spacious balustraded loggia; the apse walls are decorated with paintings by the painter Menato created in 1946.
The nave is covered by a barrel vault with wide lateral arches rhythmically arranged with smooth transverse ribs; the presbytery is topped by a cross vault with molded diagonal ribs; the apse space is closed off by a ribbed umbrella vault; the vaulted surfaces are adorned with a painted decoration of golden stars on a blue background and polychrome frames. The flooring of the nave is made of light Botticino marble; the floor of the presbytery is paved with squares of polychrome marbles. The roof is gabled with load-bearing wooden structures and covered with terracotta tiles.
