The fort on the hill of San Briccio, with its battery located in Monticelli at Vago, refers to the Austrian concept of a field fortification: when Veneto was annexed to Italy in 1866, there was still fear of Austrian interference. The hilly region of Verona was thus fortified, adopting this Austrian system to protect the Scaliger fortress from Austrian attacks.
The fort of S. Briccio was built between 1883 and 1888 by the Italian military engineering on the hill from which it takes its name, constructed in a dominant position and served by military access roads. It was built with masonry and brick, covered with earth masses to dampen the impact of any cannon fire, and the exterior was faced with cut stone. The whole was surrounded by a trapezoidal bastion of about 22,000 square meters and a defensive moat. This structure was part of the northern defensive line of the city of Verona.
By the end of the 1800s, the fort declined, surpassed in offensive-defensive characteristics. After 1918, it was transformed into an ammunition depot and remained active as a military site until 1979.
