The Pellegrina Marsh is a testament to the marshy origin of the lands of the Veronese Po Plain.
A natural area between the municipalities of Isola della Scala, Nogara, and Erbè, with an internal path of about two kilometers, is bordered by the Tartaro River.
One part is cultivated with poplar trees, while in the forest, which alternates with water pools of various sizes created by peat extraction, and the marsh, there are beech trees, alders, common reed, as well as other plants typical of wetland areas, such as robinia and willows.
There are numerous fish species present, and birds such as the little egret, the black-winged stilt, the kite, and herons nest here.
Inside the Marsh, there is the Mulino Novo. The first request for the construction of the mill dates back to February 5, 1519; however, due to many adversities, only in 1535 did the Doge of the Serenissima grant the final license to proceed with the work.
The mill and its annexed appurtenances have changed hands over time, changing ownership and undergoing modifications and upgrades in equipment to expand the possibilities of utilizing the hydraulic power derived from water.
Today, this decommissioned mill aspires to “revitalize itself to revive”: it resumes its journey to tell its story and share both old and new stories that are continually evolving; the different spaces of the building will host educational workshops and courses that introduce botany, engaging in activities such as drawing, engraving, weaving, and natural dyeing.
