It stands in Piazza dell’Antenna, in the heart of the historic center; it was built in just four months, from April to July 1375, at the behest of Cansignorio della Scala. Here, Pietro Montagna settled as rector and captain. The construction expenses were contributed by 22 towns subject to the Captaincy of Soave, listed on the plaque with the inscription, which is the largest known among those belonging to the Scaligers.
The building features a loggia with four pointed arch doorways made of shaped stone and with ogival windows. In the middle of the facade, there is a balcony; above it, a statue of the Virgin with Child on her knees, and on the sides, the patron saints of Soave, Lawrence and John the Baptist. Of great historical and poetic value, in Gothic characters, is the inscription in Latin verses located under the balcony of the facade that commemorates the construction.
During the restoration works of 1982, the crest of Pietro Montagna was discovered, carved in stone, which can now be admired in the rooms behind the loggia.
On the upper floor, it houses several classrooms, including a large hall dedicated to Giuseppe Garribba (1912-1944), martyr of Liberty, where there is an artistic sculpture of the local Monte di Pietà.
